Before I began recording, I walked into the room I would be using and realised that the room needed to be slightly refined as it wasn't in the best state to record. Thus, I rearranged the furniture to make a better recording space.
Today, me and my crew began filming the first section of my documentary which I labelled as "the second interview." I decided to do the second interview for my documentary first due to the timing as all of the participants available today. There were a few equipment issues/constraints that made me and my crew improvise with how we got different camera angles. My first issue revolved around the camera itself as the lens was blurry however this was quickly fixed by getting a different camera. Next, the only tripod available to us at the time was very short although this didn't cause it to be a huge problem and actually assisted with getting certain shots (for example a high angle) and in regards to getting a medium shot, I decided to use a table to put it on due to the fact there were two tables in the room. To avoid any audio quality issues, I decided to use my phone to record the audio as from previous testing, the audio quality is superior on my phone than the microphone. I had to reposition the camera slightly to make sure I didn't get the phone or the script in the shot which I had to repeat for all the different angles and shot sizes I decided to complete.
Friday 31st March 2023:
Today, I decided it would be in my best interest to organise the recording files I had collected and make sure everything was still acceptable. However, although everything seemed to be not blurry, there were several camera angles that were blurry thus I will have to re shoot several of my shots to ensure the best quality possible. Using this for my original draft, I can use the blurry shots as test footage for the initial draft so then I can understand how to edit certain parts of the documentary. I couldn't re shoot the footage today due to the fact that the location wasn't available and the actor wasn't in the same clothes thus this would've ruined the continuity of the product. There were no issues in regards to organising the files apart from this, as I managed to organise all of the files in preparation for my initial editing draft.
Sunday 2nd April 2023:
Today, I did an audio recording of one of the interviews as the person I interviewed was uncomfortable with showing there face thus I compromised to keep a professional practice whilst also getting the interview done. Due to the fact that I did an audio recording, the only equipment I required was a phone. Moreover, I only had to worry about the audio quality for this segment and thankfully, the audio was perfectly acceptable thus I wasn't required to take several iterations of the interview. I did not have to focus on the camera setup and the lens/blurriness of the recording as all I needed for the interview was a phone.
Tuesday 18th April 2023:
Today, I did some test recordings for the final section of the documentary to see if the area I wanted to record in would be suitable for the style I wanted to pull off. Using this for the documentary, I can ensure my product will be the highest quality I can achieve. I used a DSLR Canon camera however I did not have access to a tripod at the time although this didn't effect much of the camera angles as I envisioned using a variety of unique camera angles for the documentary that I wanted to experiment with.
Friday 21st April 2023:
Originally, I was intending on beginning to record the last part needed for the documentary however due to scheduling conflicts, I couldn't follow through with this plan. As a compromise, I decided it would be in my best interest to look up potential music I can use in the documentary by going onto the YouTube music library. In the end, there were no songs that I thought could fit in my documentary thus I decided I will not be using any songs in the documentary.
Monday 24th April 2023:
Today, the scheduling issues persisted as the camera person needed for today was absent thus I decided to update blogger and have a slow but productive day by beginning to edit my initial draft which had no issues involving the editing. Moreover, I made sure to put the BBC logo at the beginning of the documentary.
Tuesday 25th April 2023:
Today, I finished production and completed the final section of the documentary. There were no issues regarding the crew today and there was only one issue involving the recording process which was due to the fact that a certain camera angle I was going to use wouldn't work however other than that, the recording process was a smooth process. I managed to take 4 different shots of the same part for the documentary.
Post-production:
Here, you can see how I edited the interviews as using the layer feature allowed for a much more easier editing process rather than taking out and importing clips repeatedly. In addition, to avoid confusion with clips sinking over the top of each other, I decided to mute the clips so then when I decided which camera angle I wanted to use, I didn't have to become confused as to which clip was matched with the audio. This was a time-saving decision as this would've saved me the time to drag the clips over each individual time and get confused of the order.
However, due to several shots from the interview being blurry and not up to a high standard, I decided to remove them and only use the ones that I felt were up to standard. Due to time constraints and scheduling conflicts, I am unable to re shoot a plethora of the footage so I had to use what I had to create the best product possible.
Due to how I was editing the interviews, I made an error with how I was using the layers as rather than putting the final product on the same timeline, I had them dispersed on several different layers which (although it didn't) could've caused severe confusion and potential editing errors could've occurred from this small error in judgement. Thankfully, I resolved this issue before completing my draft. This potential issue should be something I try to avoid in any future projects I create.
Here, you can see me experimenting with different transitions as I felt like I could use a variety of transitions rather than stick to 1-2 basic transitions. I felt like this would make a more interesting documentary rather than it being potentially labelled as "boring" which was what I was trying my best to avoid. I tried several other unique transitions such as " turn" and "zoom" however neither of these transitions fitted with the style that I was trying to aim for thus I decided to remove them and continue searching for better transitions.
Furthermore, I decided to try colour grading the clips ton try and create more of an immersive experience however, I removed this change as the different lighting did not match the tone of the documentary. I tried to colour grade the gameplay footage however this turned out to be a mistake as the outcome made the quality of the documentary drastically worse. I tried colour grading in my second and final iteration of the documentary but this didn't work out and instead I decided to keep the original colour pallet as it looked the best in my opinion.
Friday 28th April 2023:
Today, I completed my initial draft for the documentary and rendered it to YouTube. Due to the fact this was the draft, I decided not to name it anything special or unique as that would be wasting time and I did not have a lot of time to waste. There were no issues regarding finishing the draft and the rendering although the rendering process did take a little while.
Here, this is the feedback I gathered for my initial draft for the documentary. Using this, I know the areas I can severely improve upon in my second iteration of the documentary along with improving the areas the people I gathered feedback from appreciated/liked. The audio was something I new could be improved upon however I felt it would be better to gather the feedback first incase my judgement wasn't correct and to evaluate how serious this issue was. From the feedback, I knew this would be an area I had to improve upon in ,y future iterations of the documentary.
Monday 1st May 2023:
Here, this is the second iteration of the documentary I used and similarly to the draft, I decided to just name this "documentary v2" as I didn't have the time to come up with an elaborate name for each version of the documentary. I made a significant amount of changes to this version of the documentary using the feedback I gathered to ensure that this is a supremely better quality product. In this documentary, I made sure it was a higher quality product as there were moments in the documentary that could've been improved upon (in which I did.) I tweaked the audio although I am unsure if I tweaked it enough.
Here, this is the feedback I gathered for the second iteration of the documentary. Using this, I can ensure my (potentially) final product will be up to a high enough standard. Moreover, I can see the audio still needs further correcting which is why I need to get feedback on every version of any project that I am doing as I can ensure any product is up to as high quality as possible.
